Based on Mennonite hymns: (English Victorian hymns and American Gospel songs in German translations) Commission-ed by the Fast Foundation and premiered in 1975 by the Wi-nnipeg Symphony Orchestra and Irmgard Baerg, piano. Widely performed across Canada, (Winnipeg Symphony Or-chestra; CBC Winnipeg Symphony; Vancouver Symphony Orchestra; National Arts Centre Orchestra; Hamilton Phil-harmonic Orchestra; Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Orch-estra) and performances in the USA (Chicago, Seattle and Philadelphia), Bulgaria, and China. The recording (1983), by conductor Boris Brott, Irmgard Baerg piano, and The London Symphony Orchestra, is heard world wide on radio. It is the most requested work on CBC Radio 2 in Canada and is heard on the BBC, and American and National Public Radio in the US. In 1996 it was #8 in sales on Classic FM, the most listen -ed to classical broadcaster in the UK. It is often performed in the two piano version in church and community settings. CONTINENTS (1994) 30'30"
(flute, violin, cello, piano. All four also play small percussion instruments.) Commissioned for the 1994 Commonwealth Ga-mes by Chamber Music Victoria, the work incorporates id-ioms of many Commonwealth countries: Indian ragas, Irish jigs, rhythms of Africa and the Caribbean, Aboriginal melodies and Canadian folk song. The 6 movements mirror the rhy-thms of the day: Dawn 3'25"; Morning 4'; Midday 4'30"; Afternoon 4'; Evening 5'; and Night 5'. Score and parts.

CITY OF THE PLAINS (1999) 6'36"
(Lyrics: Victor Davies, French Lyrics: Gerard Jean) A story in a country song of a prairie city built by the force of dance and song. The song is followed by variations in several multi-cult-ural styles, (Chinese, East Indian, African/Caribbean, Ukrain-ian, French, Irish, Greek etc.) and builds to a rousing conclu-sion. In The Magic Trumpet the children of Grindstone become disenchanted with their boring lives during their summer holi-day. But when lured to the Enchanted Forest, on the promise of a life in the circus by the magician Magic Maestro the Mag-nificent, things go awry. All is made right when Simon Small rescues them and confronts the evil magician. Premiered 1969 at The Manitoba Theatre Centre, it was made into a CTV spec-ial in 1975. Reginald the Robot is a story of technology gone bad. Reginald the perfect child, is created by Sourdrops, the evil candy store owner, to replace horrible children. Things go wrong when Muff, Sourdrop's incompetent helper, inserts a jelly bean into Reginald's head at the moment of creation, rather than the final transistor. In The Curse Of Ponsonby Hall, the kingdom has been curs-ed at the death of the king and the princess locked in a tower. Guarded by a dragon, reputed to be fierce, in fact the princess roasts marshmallows on Greenwort's fiery breathe. Yet there is no escape, until a handsome wandering minstrel appears to rescue her and resolves the curse on the kingdom with hilar-ious results. CTV TV special. Winner of a Golden Sheaf Award.

LET US PAY TRIBUTE TO LORD GORDON GORDON (1968)
A full length opera in two acts with libretto by Goldie Weatherhead. Based on a historical character, a con man who had a colourful and brilliant career in Scotland and New York and ends up in Winnipeg during the land boom of the 1880's. A tale of romance and intrigue, humour and pathos with a tragic ending. Full of appealing melodies and witty lyrics.

PIRATES! (1994) 60'
Music and lyrics by Victor Davies, libretto by Janis Dunning. Pirates! is a lively show intended to inspire children to read. It features singable songs for children of all ages. A cast of 11 or more performers play the parts of the pirates, school children, fish etc. and are involved in an epic adventure. Based on Bl-ack Bart an actual Nova Scotia pirate (who in this show steals all the books!) Premiere: The Charlottetown Festival by the Young Company. THE MUSICAL CIRCUS (1981) 12-14'
A musical theatre entertainment for soprano, dancers, mus-ician - actors as animals: violin (snake); viola (monkey); cello (elephant); guitar (peacock); horn (lion); percussion (bear); accordion (zebra); and harp. The musicians as animals stage a revolt against the ringmaster (the soprano) but are charmed into submission by the mechanical harp. Commissioned by Sound Stage Canada for the Zagreb Biennial. Performed in Toronto and on tour in Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Rumania and Austria and featured in the Rhombus Media CBC TV special. (musicians play off score - rental)

THEATRE SONGS

Victor Davies has written over 500 songs for the children's CTV television series Let's Go! and The Rockets in a wide variety of styles. Because they were composed to be acted and danced most are theatre songs. Golden Toad Music is arrang-ing many of these for publication. Please inquire.
